The Association of Ex-Political Prisoners (AEPP) is a South African registered Non-Profit (Company) [NPC]. The AEPP is governed by a Constitution whose purpose is to initiate and advance the interest of ex-political prisoners and their dependents.

 

Members are ex-political prisoners convicted and imprisoned in the Republic of South Africa as a result of him / her having participated in the struggle for the liberation of the Republic of South Africa and its people from slavery, colonialism and apartheid. Members are verified through prison numbers. Accredited children and dependents are similarly members.

MAIN OBJECTIVES

 

The main objectives of the AEPP as outlined in its constitution are:

 

  1. Uphold this Constitution and protect its integrity through its structures.
  2. Look after members’ interests through improving their educational, social health, economic and basic human needs and well-being.
  3. Raise funds and conduct economic activities to self-sustain and develop member interests.
  4. Manage the AEPP through capable, competent and qualified for purpose leadership.
  5. Mentor and train children and dependents to assume leadership of AEPP so it is rejuvenated and grows in perpetuity.

 

SECONDARY OBJECTIVES

 

The secondary objectives are:

 

  1. Lobby to achieve the objectives.
  2. Maintain and uphold the legacy of our Freedom Struggle and Activism.
  3. Continue to lead in the quest for a just and fair society.
  4. Support the international solidarity movement on the release of political prisoners around the world, with particular reference to Palestine.
  5. Initiate and build relations with local and international organizations whose primary focus is realizing a world in which human rights, human dignity and equality are the cornerstones of democracy and freedom.

An elective AGM is held every five years. The National Executive Committee (NEC) consists of nine provincial representatives and five National Office Bearers (NOB).

The Association of Ex-Political Prisoners (AEPP) is a national association founded in Cape Town in 1995. The AEPP was launched on Robben Island by Nelson Mandela, the President of the Republic of South Africa. The association is a non-profit, non-partisan structure that represents the diverse ideological and political viewpoints of all previous anti-apartheid political formations. It represents men and women who qualify as members through having served prison terms on Robben Island and other Apartheid prisons. It has a national office and offices in all nine South African provinces. Robben Island symbolizes the triumph of human spirit over adversity.
